RAINSTORM WITH A STORY by TOM BROWN

This past weekend I gave a free Plein Air Painting Demonstration at the Orange County Great Park, near the gallery that is hosting an exhibition of my paintings and some of my students' paintings.

The start of the day looked very threatening, with dark clouds massing overhead. Some other artists and spectators were there also, and we all felt we were about to be rained on while painting out in the open where there was no shelter. Fortunately we completed our paintings before any rain fell. I then hustled up to the gallery to hang my most recent demo painting along with the others and headed out to lunch.

During lunch the clouds burst and the rain came down in a deluge. When I saw it I absolutely HAD to get back out and paint that downpour!

All my painting gear was still in my car, and I made a beeline for the shelter of a huge oak tree where I set up and painted this little gem in the rainstorm. I got drenched on the way there, but the oak sheltered me while I painted. For this one I decided to use just my palette knife and fingers to capture the drenching rain that was pouring down. I think I succeeded.

You can almost smell the clean, fresh scent of rain in the air in this painting. It's true; every cloud has a silver lining! This one was very satisfying to paint and I hope you enjoy it too. Thanks for stopping to look.
