BACK BAY, NEWPORT BEACH ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING by Tom Brown

I was preparing to conduct a Plein Air Workshop at this location for other artists and I did this 4x8-inch study while scouting the location in advance. I was struck by the wonderful lighting effects and simply HAD to capture it in a painting then and there. This is the result, and I was very pleased with it; I hope you like it as well.

If my art makes your day a bit brighter, or brings back a treasured memory, or gives you a moment's respite from the hectic pace of life, then I've succeeded to some small degree.

Thanks for looking.

If my art makes your day a bit brighter, or brings back a treasured memory, or gives you a moment's respite from the hectic pace of life, then I've succeeded to some small degree.

I painted countless barns when I lived in the Midwest, and also did many pencil sketches on location that are still in my reference files. This painting was done recently using one of those sketches that was done years ago.

I had always wanted to create an oil painting from that study and finally got around to doing it. I sketched the view looking outside from the inside of another barn on a friend's farm. It's a "DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW"

I was pleased with this painting and I hope you like it too.

1952 CHEVY PICKUP ORIGINAL PLEIN AIR OIL PAINTING by Tom Brown

I came across this 1952 Chevy Pickup overgrown by weeds in a field at the side of a country road.

It was rusted out and clearly abandoned long since. On the driver's seat was a faded "For Sale" sign that had apparently been on the dashboard and fallen down. That sign was the only way I knew the year and model since I don't really know much about cars and trucks.

I couldn't resist doing a painting of it on the spot. I was pleased with how this painting turned out and I hope you like it too.

If my art makes your day a bit brighter, or brings back a treasured memory, or gives you a moment's respite from the hectic pace of life, then I've succeeded to some small degree. Feel free to drop me a line and let me know.

FIGURATIVE CITY SCENE, SHOPPERS, URBAN LANDSCAPE by Tom Brown

I love to watch people in crowds, and sketch them wherever I can. I often use a tiny sketch pad that fits in my pocket.

I think all that practice helps when I paint a crowd scene like this. It allows me to feel at ease painting a variety of people in a variety of poses. And I think that lends a freshness to the painting.

I was pleased with this one and I hope you like it too.

If my art makes your day a bit brighter, or brings back a treasured memory, or gives you a moment’s respite from the hectic pace of life – then I’ve succeeded to some small degree.

“MEMORIES OF MOROCCO”
A SERIES by TOM BROWN

I visited Morocco years ago and sketched countless things that caught my eye. The architecture. Marketplaces. People and their clothing. Colorful surroundings everywhere. It was a fascinating experience. I planned to create a series of paintings from the sketches upon returning home, but got side-tracked. Recently I came across my sketches and decided the time had come.

This series of miniature paintings is the result. Each of these is a one-of-a-kind original oil painting, about the size of a postcard. They each measure 4.25 by 5.5 inches and have been created on a heavy weight card stock that is acid-free and archival. Each of these brings back colorful "MEMORIES OF MOROCCO." I hope you enjoy them.

URBAN PLEIN AIR PAINTING by Tom Brown

Artists who follow my blog often comment that they enjoy seeing the original subject matter that inspired my paintings. For their benefit I thought I’d share the background on this one.

To many artists the edge of a parking lot may not seem like a suitable subject for a painting. But when I saw this I was struck by the light and shadow on the cars and the interesting background that included a giant palm tree.

It seemed to have potential so I quickly did a rough pencil sketch to clarify my thoughts about what I wanted to include in the composition.

Using the sketch as a guide I launched confidently into my painting.

I had decided to use a very loose, painterly brush technique in this painting and simplify much of the background. The pattern of light and dark values of the cars had initially caught my eye, and that’s what I wanted to emphasize.

I’m including detail images of the cars and also the distant palm tree so you can see this effect more clearly.

After completing this painting I pulled out my camera and shot a photo of how the scene had changed while I was painting.

I was glad I had done the initial rough sketch because by this time several cars had moved and been replaced by others.

I often caution my Plein Air Workshop students to begin by carefully noting anything that could change while they’re painting, like the direction of light and shadows, clouds, and in this case the cars. I call this “capturing the fugitives.”

I was pleased with this painting and hope you like it too.

Let me know if you enjoyed this little glimpse behind the scenes.

PLEIN AIR DEMONSTRATION PAINTING by Tom Brown

I created this painting as a demonstration for the artists in a Plein Air workshop I recently taught.

It was a way to show my approach to a subject like this, including how to look for the heart of the subject and then how to capture that on canvas.

I felt it would be interesting to show the scene that inspired this painting.

FIREFLIES, MOONLIGHT, NIGHT SCENE, 8x10-inch ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING by Tom Brown

When we were young kids my brothers and I were fond of chasing "lightening bugs" at night. We'd capture them in glass jars (with air holes in the lids). We would enjoy them for a while and release them before coming in for the night. This painting recaptures memories of those times.

Years ago while visiting Morocco I did a series of small sketches with the intention of using them to create oil paintings at a later time. (Artist friends who know me are aware that I habitually carry a small sketch pad and pencil everywhere I go.)

I recently came across the sketches I did in Morocco and created this miniature oil painting in the studio from one of the sketches. It brings back exciting memories.

I call these small paintings on art cards "POCKET PAINTINGS" because the painting kit I use to create them is so compact it fits in my pocket. It's a great way to capture the inspiration of the moment and preserve the memory to share with others.

This painting is the size of a postcard, yet it's an original oil painting that was created while working directly from Nature on location, which is called "Plein Air" painting.

Paintings like this make wonderful Collector's Items.
