TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP PAINTING

A spot known as the “Top Of The World” was the location for my Plein Air Workshop yesterday.

Perfect weather and outstanding scenery made it another memorable painting experience for everyone.

This sparkling little gem is a 5x7-inch palette knife painting I did during the workshop. I was interested in capturing the feeling of aerial perspective in this composition.

The view goes on forever. From this elevation we could see beyond the mountains all the way to the most distant horizon, and I wanted to show that here.

I was also interested in showing the variety of greens, from the deep rich colors of the oak to the minty soft greens of the bushes at the base of the tree. And the muted grayed-greens of the hill on the left. I was pleased with the how this one turned out; I hope you like it too.

PALM TREES BY TOM BROWN, PLUS SEASCAPE BY ARTIST FRIEND

Besides my own 5x7-inch palm tree painting I wanted to show a painting done by another artist last Saturday when my class painted at the ocean in Laguna Beach.

I was quite impressed with her interpretation of the ocean and rocks and wanted to share it here. Congratulations, Pat. And thanks for letting me use this photo of your painting.

SEASHORE, TOM BROWN ACEO POSTCARD POCKET PAINTING

SOLD

This original oil painting is a little jewel with lots of sparkle.Paintings this size are known by various names such as miniatures, ACEOs (Art Cards Editions & Originals), postcard paintings or pocket paintings. And they are highly collectible.

When time or circumstances do not permit a larger painting these small sizes allow me to explore an idea, capture a moment on location or work out problems before launching into a large painting in the studio.

This painting is a mere 4”x3”. It is small enough to fit in your pocket or use as an elegant bookmark. And yet in the right frame it will make a beautiful statement in any room of the home.

PAINTING AT THE OCEAN WITH TOM BROWN

This is another painting done at my Saturday morning workshop.

It was actually my first one of the day. I began this painting early in the morning when a marine layer created a grayed effect to the scene. Color was still discernable, but it was muted. I “pushed” the colors a bit in my painting to bring more life to it (using my artistic license).

The photos below this painting show this gray color effect, but as we painted the sky cleared and the sun came out. The photo above my painting shows part of the group after the skies cleared. Yesterday’s blog shows a painting I did during the sunny part of the day.

PAINTING AT THE BEACH WITH TOM BROWN

SOLD
Perfect weather and stunning scenery inspired everyone to create their best paintings when we gathered at the ocean during my workshop yesterday. In the group photo you can see some of the artists enjoying the day.

This is one of the paintings I did at the workshop. The large white building on the far side of the beach is the famous Hotel Laguna.

$1 AUCTION, AMERICANA, TOM BROWN PLEIN AIR PAINTING

I call this one “VANISHING AMERICA.” Mom & Pop stores like this once did a brisk business on small side roads across America. Freeways now cut through the landscape, bypassing these small town establishments and leaving them to fade away with the bygone era.

This painting is up for auction with a one-dollar starting bid. Click here to bid:

ART LESSON, LARGE FLORAL OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

Many people have expressed interest in the workshop notes I posted with yesterday’s plein air painting. Today I’m including a sample of the notes from a recent studio workshop.

I email supplemental notes to my students as a way of helping them lock in what we covered. This is one page from the class notes when I painted this 12x16-inch floral painting. Enjoy!

By the way, here’s a link to an online preview for the hardcover collector’s edition of my paintings: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1786423

PLEIN AIR LESSON AND PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

SOLD
Saturday I taught a workshop for a group of other artists at the edge of a wildlife sanctuary. This is a 6x8-inch demonstration I painted as part of the day’s lesson.

I usually email additional notes following each class, to help the artists lock in some of what we covered that day. I thought it might be interesting to show some of the notes about this subject.

I did this palette knife painting as a demonstration piece for a Plein Air Workshop that I taught not far from my home. We're fortunate to have this kind of outstanding scenery combined with sunny weather most of the year. It's always a pleasure to take advantage of the opportunity to capture it in paintings. PLEIN AIR TIPS AND PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

During my Plein Air Workshops beginning next Saturday we will paint at a variety of inspiring locations.

We will paint on the beach at the ocean, with cliffs and palm trees rising above the pounding surf. And from a hilltop we will paint the panoramic splendor of distant mountain ranges.

But Plein Air paintings can also be inspired by something as simple as the beauty of a lone tree like this. I wanted to capture the off-balance way it leaned downhill. And the variety of soft greens brought out by the light. For this little 6x8-inch painting, that was enough.

During my workshop we may focus on stunning scenes some times and simple things like this at other times. I always try to give students a wide variety of options and subjects for painting.

And I always choose easy-to-reach locations that have convenient parking and restrooms so students can enjoy their experience to the fullest.

I even demonstrate ways new students can try their hand at outdoor painting without spending money on things like a French easel or other expensive equipment.

One example is the simple pizza box shown here that functions as a laptop easel.

I used this during the filming of one of my TV shows. I fastened my canvas to the lid and spread out my paints in the bottom. It served as an easel while I painted, and when the painting was complete I simply closed the box to safely transport it home.

Give it a try some time. Take a few friends and go for a picnic at your local park. With this pizza box setup you can try your hand at Plein Air painting and see what all the excitement is about.

Have a great day, and thanks for stopping to look.

PLEIN AIR TIP AND PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

Plein air painters, this will interest you. I’ve just gotten a terrific new umbrella-chair that’s perfect for outdoor painting in the summer.

I don’t sell this umbrella chair but if you’re interested email me and I’ll give you the details about where I found the one I just bought for myself. It’s a great bargain. tombrownstudio@cox.net

It’s great for staying cool outside in the hot summer sun and I plan to use it in my new plein air workshops beginning next weekend.

I don’t recommend umbrellas that attach to an easel because the wind can tip them over, spilling everything – your palette, painting, and all your supplies. But with the umbrella fastened to the chair it eliminates that danger.

Today’s painting:
