ABOUT TODAY’S NOTEBOOK SKETCH
A heavy marine layer replaced our usual sunny California weather. But this fishing boat being taken from the sea inspired me and I captured it in a small quick sketch. A notepad and my little pochade box were all I needed.

A photo recorded accurate details, while my sketch will serve for my creative vision of this scene in case I decide to do a studio painting of this subject at some future time.

PLEIN AIR QUICK SKETCH BY TOM BROWN

NOTEBOOK QUICK SKETCH
A quick pencil sketch. Then a few strokes of oil paint. And a photo to record details. That’s how I locked in my vision of the possibilities for this scene. I don’t let nature limit me; I like to inject the spark of inspiration I can envision when I spot a subject.

On Feb 26 I begin a new 5-week Plein Air Workshop where I will teach other artists techniques like this. And lots more. We will paint at breathtaking locations in Orange County on Saturday mornings.

This workshop is for all skill levels, from ABSOLUTE BEGINNER to experienced artists. If you’d like to join us, email for details. tombrownstudio@cox.net

For other artists who follow my work, the following may be of interest.
I currently have 17 downloadable art lessons available that are delivered via email as PDFs, which are readable on any computer. They can also be printed out on a desktop printer for hard-copy reference. The full list is shown below.

A very popular lesson is COLOR MIXING MADE EASY (29 pages), which solves both basic and advanced color mixing problems. Color is your vocabulary in the language of painting. The better you learn it, the better you can fluently express yourself in your paintings. It is item 9 shown in the list below.

COUNTRY ROAD BY TOM BROWN

“TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROAD”
8x10 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD
Here’s another painting where I used very loose and juicy brushwork that was full of emotion.

Forget the fussy details, I tell my students. Go for the big bang, then sprinkle on a bit of magic. That’s what I tried to do here.

FRESH FISH BY TOM BROWN

“ART ON ICE”
10x5 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD
These beauties at a local ethnic market were lying on a bed of ice, just waiting to be painted. My first stop in this store is always the fresh fish displays. Stunning to say the least.

My goal with this painting was to capture the character of the fish while minimizing any distracting detail. I have no idea what variety of fish these are, but they were beautiful. I had no choice; I simply HAD to paint them.

Perhaps soon I’ll get the chance to paint some of the other wonderful varieties always available here.

I once painted a pizza using just a credit card and pizza box. (See my YouTube videos to watch it.) This time I spent a bit more time and used brushes. I wanted to really savor it while I worked. And afterwards, too.

MORNING LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

“EARLY MORNING LIGHT”
12x8 inch original oil painting

Fog makes colors appear as if they are being seen through a gauzy veil. All is quiet and still; even the sounds of birds in the trees are muffled in the thick air. And the world seems at peace.

STUDY FOR A PAINTING ON A PIANO BY TOM BROWN

Today I am sharing something unusual – a 10x10 inch vignette study of oranges and blossoms, done on unprepared masonite as preparation for a larger undertaking: a painting on a piano.

I had been asked to create a painting of my choice on the piano shown above as part of an event sponsored by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. The study above was preparation for that project.

Recently I received word that this piano has been purchased from the Pacific Symphony by the Great Park.

My painting on the piano features a panoramic scene of the citrus groves for which Orange County was named. The art style I used is similar to nostalgic Orange Crate Art popular in the era when the Orange County Citrus Industry was in its heyday.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse behind the scenes. Thanks for looking.
