VIDEO ABOUT NIGHT PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“NIGHT RIDER”
5x7 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

I actually painted this outdoors AT NIGHT using a palette knife and the compact pochade paintbox shown in my YouTube video.

Initially there was no traffic on this deserted road, but just as I was finishing the painting a car came whipping down the road. It changed the entire feeling of the scene.

The car was gone in a flash, but working from memory I immediately added the blast of light from his headlights and the streak of red from his tail lights. Click the detail image for a better view. Hope you like it.

BALBOA ISLAND FOG BY TOM BROWN

HOLLYWOOD AT DAWN BY TOM BROWN

“GOOD MORNING, HOLLYWOOD”
5x7 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown
SOLD

The city awakens. Golden sunlight streams through billowing clouds. Palm trees wave gently in the morning breeze. Whose dreams of Hollywood fame will come true today?

I painted this from atop a high hill overlooking the city as first light washed across the city. For this painting I used a palette knife and the small pochade shown in my YouTube videos.

The pochade is completely self-contained and it simplified the process tremendously. I simply opened it and I was ready to paint. When I finished this painting I closed the lid with the painting securely held inside. And I was off to paint at another location . . . . .

BEACH, LIFEGUARD TOWER, PALMS BY TOM BROWN

“NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY”
5x7 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

On a nearly deserted stretch of Newport Beach in the early morning haze I spotted this lifeguard tower, and immediately saw its possibilities as the subject for a charming glimpse of beach life.

“NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY” was the sign posted on the side of this stand, and I felt that would make an interesting title for this piece.

By grouping the entire mass of background buildings into a single value-shape I minimized the focus on the background. This helped place greater emphasis on the lifeguard tower as the key focal point. I was pleased with this result and I hope you like it.

NEWPORT BEACH PIER BY TOM BROWN

“THE PIER AT NEWPORT BEACH”
5x7 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

A camera cannot capture feelings about a subject. It simply records everything with equal emphasis, including what should be left out or what should be emphasized.

The way an artist filters a subject through his creative vision is what determines the outcome of a painting, and whether or not the subject is interesting or emotionally compelling.

At first glance, this scene may have appeared as a desolate area with little opportunity to provide potential subject matter for a painting.

But when I looked with a creative mind I found this interesting arrangement of shapes and colors that just begged to be painted. Despite the gloomy weather on this particular morning I was quite pleased with this little piece. It has a very restful and serene feeling about it. I hope you like it too.

SEA SHELLS, PLEIN AIR STILL LIFE BY TOM BROWN

“SEA SHELLS IN THE SAND”
5x7 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown
SOLD

The iridescent color inside these shells caught my eye and became the focal point of this simple sandy still life. An oil painting "snapshot" of summer beach memories.

I found these shells in the sand at my feet as I conducted a recent Plein Air Workshop in Newport Beach. When the Workshop was completed, I remained on the beach awhile longer and captured this little vignette of beach life.

This painting is on eBay with a VERY low starting bid. If this painting appeals to you click here to bid:

CANYON RETREAT, PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“CANYON RETREAT”
5x7 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

Santiago Canyon is a short drive from my home and it offers a serene getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The only sounds are birds chirping and an occasional car passing on a distant road.

This painting was done purely for personal pleasure, to revel in the serenity of the moment.

I hope you can feel that sense of peacefulness when viewing this little painting. If you would care to own it, let me know.

ALASKA, GLACIER LARGE OIL PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“ALASKAN ICE CUBES”
12x16 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

I painted this in the cozy warmth of a studio, from photos taken by an artist friend during a recent cruise in Alaska. (I prefer to stay warm.)

Brrr! Check out the icy colors of the glaciers. And click the detail image to see the thick, juicy paint that describes the mountains and snow.

This one was really fun to paint, especially since I could work in a cozy studio rather than outdoors in the freezing cold where this scene was photographed.

Hope you like it. Thanks for looking, and let me know if you would like to own this painting.

VIBRANT, COLORFUL LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

“BLUE SKIES SMILING AT ME”
6x8 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

This painting shows a portion of the same setting as yesterday’s post, but with brilliant sunlight across the landscape. The colors in this scene are now very vibrant!

It was painted during the same plein air workshop that I mentioned yesterday. I thought it would be interesting to show a photo of some artists who were there. I chose a nicely sheltered spot from which we could paint, yet remain in shade when the sun became too warm. (Remember, we’re painting in Southern California!)

Thanks for stopping to look. Enjoy.

LAGUNA CANYON FOG PLEIN AIR STUDY BY TOM BROWN

“LAGUNA CANYON FOG”
Approx. 5x7 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown

Off to the left of Laguna Canyon Road I spotted this marvelous little scene while driving up the canyon early one morning. I had no time to do a full-sized painting so I quickly recorded the essence of the scene in this little oil study on canvas.

The plan was to use it as the basis of a larger studio painting when I had the time. Somehow I’ve never gotten around to doing the larger painting. What is it they say? The best laid plans of mice and men . . .

Because of its size, this little study seems to have a special charm that I feel it wouldn’t be the same in a larger painting.

I’ve had it on my studio wall now for more than ten years, and finally decided to share it on my blog.

Thanks for stopping.

DENTED STUDIO BRUSH CAN PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“DENTED BRUSH CAN”
5x7 inch original palette knife
oil painting by Tom Brown

SOLD

Bam. There it is. Palette knife paintings go right to the heart of things. Like this dented studio brush can.

I love creating these little palette knife pieces for a change of pace. They have real punch. The color is clean and bold. The “brush strokes” are dynamic and make a strong statement. And the composition captures the heart of the subject without lots of fussy details.

I thought I’d include a few of my favorite brushes are in the photo too. Clearly there are enough for many more paintings.

Ironically this painting was done without any of them since it’s a palette knife painting!

Let me know if you would like to give it a good home. tombrownstudio@cox.net

LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES, LARGE PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES”
11x14 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

As Forrest Gump says, “It’s like a box o’ chocolates; ya never know what you’re gonna git.”

Intermittent bouts of sunshine and showers kept us on our toes during the plein air workshop I conducted this morning while I painted this. I shot the photo during the sunshine; can you tell?

Our workshop went something like this: Paint; stop and cover up; okay paint again, quick. Stop; cover up again! Okay, paint again.

Well, maybe not that bad. When we saw droplets hitting the water we covered our paintings and waited for the showers to pass. Then we resumed work when it was safe. Eventually the showers passed and we had beautiful weather for the remainder of the session.

And we all managed to come away with some delightful memories and paintings.

Check out the delicious subtleties of color and thick juicy strokes of luscious oil paint in the detail image. I used a combination of bold and muted hues for a delicate balance of eye-catching color that still maintained a restful feeling.

Hope you like it. As always, feedback or purchase details are welcome. tombrownstudio@cox.net
