ROCKY STREAM BED, PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

"ON THE ROCKS"
6x8 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Here's another change of pace from my usual Plein Air landscapes; an intimate close-up of a rocky stream bed.

I was attracted to this subject by the interesting pattern of rocks. I wanted to capture the craggy feeling of these rocks while keeping the overall composition loose and free.

For comparison with my Plein Air painting I am attaching a photo of the scene that I shot while painting on location. This lets you see how I edited various elements of the scene to create a more compelling visual while maintaining the essence of the subject.

I am pleased with the result, and in fact I'm thinking of creating an entire series of paintings in this vein. Let me know your thoughts.

This is another painting that may appear in the book of my art to be released later this year. If you would like to purchase this painting at "pre-gallery" prices email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for looking.

URBAN PLEIN AIR ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING by TOM

"A HIDDEN SIDE OF BALBOA ISLAND"
5x7 inch Plein Air Urban Landscape
by Tom Brown

To purchase email: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

For a change of pace I decided to paint an urban plein air scene. I set up my compact little pochade easel along the streets of Balboa Island in Newport Beach. This view actually looks down a back alley of this charming little island beach town.

The variety of architecture and sparkling bits of color that were interlocked throughout the scene caught my eye. The phone poles and power lines created additional interest.

While I painted I took a photo for comparison with the finished painting. The amount of detail was a challenge to paint without losing the sense of freshness I wanted to maintain. But I feel I succeeded and I was very pleased with the results. Click on the detail image for a better look.

I have decided this painting will be included in the book of my art due to be released later this year. If you would like to purchase this little jewel at "pre-gallery" prices email me for details. tombrownstudio@cox.net

Later this year I will again be represented by brisk-and-mortar galleries, which will cause a rise in prices. Until then I can still release my paintings at online prices.

Hope you like this one. It was a pleasure to paint. Thanks for stopping to look.

SKY & CLOUDS PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

"HEAVY WEATHER BREWING"
6x8 inch original plein air
oil painting by Tom Brown

Email for purchasing details: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

As much as I enjoy creating large commissioned paintings in the studio, I still treasure the time spent on location where I create little jewels like this directly from nature. I generally paint small on location so that I can capture the essence of the scene quickly, before conditions change.

This painting is an example of times when one must paint without hesitation. The clouds were moving fast and the light would fade quickly as well. I needed to move with a sure brush or lose the opportunity. I did exactly that, and I got it!

One bonus of small paintings like this is the power of a well-placed brushstroke. Each stroke of the brush and each "piece" of paint carries a great deal of impact and strength in a small painting.

Hope you like this one as much as I do. If you would like to own this piece at "pre-gallery" prices email me for details: tombrownstudio@cox.net (Later this year I will again be represented by brick-and-mortar galleries, which will necessitate a rise in prices. Until then I can still release these little treasures at pre-gallery prices.)

SKY AT SUNSET PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

"LIVING IN THE MOMENT"

SOLD

This sunset was too good to pass up. In cases like this my motto is: grab it while you can! And at times like this there is no time to over-think the composition. I have learned to trust my instincts and react on an emotional level. I simply let my heart guide the brush and the painting comes naturally.

SKY & CLOUDS PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

“A WHOLE LOT OF WEATHER”
8x10 inch Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown
For purchasing details email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

Here in Southern California the weather forecast is often the same nearly every day: Clear skies, pleasant temperatures and balmy breezes.

But not lately. We’ve been getting “a whole lot of weather” recently, and it has created lively subject matter for plein air paintings like this.

With one weather front moving out and another moving in we were treated to some remarkable sky formations. It was too good to pass up. In cases like this my motto is: grab it while you can!

Hope you like it. Thanks for looking and have a stunning day!

LARGE IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“FOGGY MORNING”
12x16 inch Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown

The air is sweet and the landscape seems unusually quiet in a heavy fog. The overall effect is a sense of great peacefulness. I’ve painted on locations under these conditions a number of times, creating valuable plein air studies that capture the essence of the moment.

This piece was done in the studio from previous plein air studies. In this painting I was particularly interested in capturing the atmospheric perspective that was accentuated by the foggy conditions. The effect is almost as if a gauzy veil is drawn over each successive plane in the landscape, making each distant plane more pale and indistinct.

I hope I’ve captured that feeling in this piece. If you would like this painting for your home email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

LARGE HARBOR SCENE by TOM BROWN

“QUIET COLORS”
12x15 inch Original Impressionist
Oil Painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

An artist friend and I were discussing the work of SC Yuan recently, and it inspired me to do a painting in a similar style. Just to get it out of my system. We had just been painting at water’s edge on Balboa Island, and that provided the idea for this subject.

This piece is influenced by SC Yuan's work. But it is a cross between Yuan's style and the style I normally use in my own work.

I began this painting by mixing a pile of black from the spectrum colors on my palette. Then I used that mixture to gray-down nearly all the colors used in the painting. This is unusual for me, since I normally tend to push the color a bit in my subjects.

Painting this way resulted in the subtly grayed colors so prevalent in many of Yuan’s paintings. I was quite pleased with the final look of the piece, and I’m including a detail image where you can see these final color mixtures a little more closely.

Hope you like it.

BARE TREES, RAINY DAY by TOM BROWN

“BARE TREES, RAINY DAY”
8x10 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Oil Painting by Tom Brown

Another painting from my Saturday Plein Air class, begun during the rain from beneath a safe shelter and finished as the skies began to clear. I liked the subdued color that was created by the heavy skies as I began this piece and tried to capture that in this painting.

Despite the lack of sunshine (rare for us here in Southern California) we had a wonderful time and everybody created some beautiful works on location. Hope you like this one; if so, drop me a line. Thanks for looking.

“TREES, RAINY DAY”
9x12 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Oil Painting by Tom Brown

Today was another rainy day and I moved my Plein Air class to a new location where we could paint in complete comfort. Very muted colors today because of the weather. Puddles in the foreground of this painting, and hazy, dark skies. That’s the feeling I wanted to capture here.

SKY AND CLOUDS, LARGE PLEIN AIR by TOM BROWN

“UP, UP AND AWAY”
16x12 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown
SOLD

Sometimes things fall into place effortlessly. This was one of those times. Clouds just kept rising up and up, seemingly forever. The entire scene was truly awe-inspiring, and that was the feeling I wanted to capture here.

This canvas is 16x12 inches, larger than I usually paint outdoors. One of the challenges when working this size is to maintain the freshness and bold brushwork that is typical of smaller paintings. I think I nailed it here. If you click on the detail image you can see it better.

This one will probably go into a gallery later this year, but if you would prefer to get it at “pre-gallery” pricing, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for looking. Have a stunning day!

PLEIN AIR PAINTING by TOM BROWN

“TOP OF THE MORNING”
8x6 inch Plein Air Impressionist
Original Oil Painting by Tom Brown

Artists participating my plein air workshop met at this stunning location Saturday morning. Yesterday I posted a painting done during the workshop and this was another one, which I painted as a demonstration for the group. Again my particular interest was the sense of distance that I wanted to capture in this piece.

The hills and valleys seemed to roll on forever, disappearing into the mountains on the far horizon. I was quite pleased with this plein air painting.

If you would like it for your wall, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
