AFFORDABLE IMPRESSIONIST PLEIN AIR ART by TOM BROWN

“EVENING FLIGHT OF BIRDS”
6x5 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

I was captivated by the sunlight dusting the treetops, and the muted colors in the foreground contrasted with the brilliant colors in the sky. As I was putting the finishing touches on this painting a flight of birds crossed the sky, heading home for the day. They provided the final bit of sparkle in this little jewel of a painting.

Many artists who follow this blog have been inquiring about my Plein Air Painting videos. All my earlier videos are currently sold out, but I am excited to announce that I have just received a new shipment of my TWO NEWEST VIDEOS from my TV show on Plein Air Painting.

Each video was filmed entirely on location, and the camera zooms in very tight to capture subtleties of color mixtures on the palette and brush techniques as I apply strokes of rich, juicy oils to the canvas.

“JEFFREY OPEN SPACE TRAIL” follows me from start to finish as I work on a large toned panel. You’ll see how to create color variety and continuity throughout the canvas. You will learn about underpainting and overpainting, as well as how to mix the proper consistency of paint for various effects, and much more. In this video I also demonstrate a variety of practical and inexpensive equipment options you can make for outdoor painting.

“PAINTING PLEIN AIR MINIATURES” follows the development of TWO separate paintings in a single video. In this lesson I discuss when, why and how to paint miniatures on location. This video includes lessons on how to unify value-masses in your paintings to create solid compositions, how to lead the eye to the focal point and how to create sizzling surface texture.

Each video is priced at $30 while supplies last (but supplies are limited). Shipping is free within the USA. To order videos email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

Thanks for looking. Enjoy the view and have a wonderful day!

“SECLUDED PATH AMONG THE TREES”
5x4 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

This painting was done the same day as the previous post. A friend and I explored the maze of pathways in a wildlife sanctuary, eventually settling here to paint. When we later tried to return to the entrance we discovered that we were a bit lost.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find our way out. But there were rewards such as seeing a great blue heron from several feet away, observing hawks and waterfowl in their natural habitat, plus a number of other delights you simply don’t get when painting in the studio.

PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE by TOM BROWN

“EUCALYPTUS”
5x7 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

SOLD

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net

This painting was done as a demonstration for my students during a plein air workshop I conducted Saturday. I felt it would be interesting to share this on my blog as well.

I enjoy the graceful shapes of the various types of eucalyptus trees we have throughout Southern California. This painting emphasized the graceful lines of the limbs and the interesting clusters of richly colored foliage in these trees.

As a secondary lesson, this painting also called attention to the wide variety of greenery in the scene – the golden greens of the eucalyptus, the warmer greens in the bottom foreground and the colors in foliage along the edge of the hillside.

I was pleased with this little painting and hope you like it too.

Thanks for looking. Have a beautiful day!

“CLIFF DWELLERS”
5x4 inch original plein air oil painting
by Tom Brown

To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

Along the ocean in Southern California are many scenic spots where towering cliffs overlook the ocean. Laguna Beach is one of the popular locations where I often teach plein air workshops for other artists. Another favorite of mine is La Jolla, closer to the Mexican border. And many other spots between have equally beautiful views.

Often there are private homes perched along these cliff tops to enjoy these stunning views. I’m not one of those fortunate enough to live there but I can enjoy the opportunity to paint the scenery.

Hope you like this one. Thanks for looking.

PLEIN AIR SUNSET by TOM BROWN

“TAKING A LONG LAST LOOK”
10x3 inch original oil painting
by Tom Brown
To purchase this painting, email me at: tombrownstudio@cox.net
SOLD

Sometimes a “big idea” can be captured on a small canvas. I felt this was one of those times. Everything cried out for a panoramic composition: the scene itself, the lighting, and the drama of the setting sun. This was another of those special occasions when the canvas seemed to paint itself – I just grabbed the brush and hung on for the ride. Hope you like it.

My wife just returned from the farmer’s market and I quickly stole these away into my studio before anyone ate them. I especially liked the one with the leaf still attached; it added a nice touch of additional color and interest. I hope you agree.

Once again, I want to say a big "THANK YOU" to all those who took the time to stop by and see me at the Art Fair this past weekend. It was great fun seeing so many familiar faces, and even meeting a number of you whom I have only known through my blog and emails until now.

Thanks again. Have a beautiful day!
