COUNTRY ROAD, PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“AROUND THE NEXT BEND”

I always enjoy exploring remote country roads or other places I’ve never been before.

You never know what you’ll find around the next bend. When I find a scene like this I pull off the road and set up my easel or use the small pochade paintbox that’s always in my car.

Hope you like this one; thanks for stopping by.

Many artists tend to specialize in just one type of subject like still life, or figurative, or landscape. I like to paint it all. Figures. Landscapes. Still life paintings. Portraits. Whatever moves my spirit.

This is probably a result of having been an artist all my life. From the time I was a small child I wanted to be an artist. My mother was an accomplished artist, as was her father. I suppose it was in my genes.

I also enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with other artists through my TV show and workshops. FYI, a few spots are still available in some of my upcoming classes. If you can’t attend my classes, you may be interested in my instructional CDs or DVDs. Email for details. tombrownstudio@cox.net.

LANDSCAPE, CITYSCAPE PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“YOU CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE”
by Tom Brown
18x24 inch original oil on canvas

SOLD

This scene shows a narrow country road with a city skyline in the distance. I created a plein air study on location, then used that study to paint this larger canvas in the studio.

Many artists tend to specialize in just one type of subject like still life, or figurative, or landscape. I like to paint it all. Figures. Landscapes. Still life paintings. Animals (especially horses). Portraits. Whatever moves my spirit.

I truly love plein air painting; getting out in the fresh air with my oil paints and working directly from nature as I do on my TV show. I also enjoy painting in the studio, doing still life and figurative paintings and I often teach classes for other artists in the studio.

For those interested, a few spaces are still available in some of my studio and outdoor (plein air) classes. If you can’t attend my classes, you may be interested in my instructional CDs or DVDs. Email for details. tombrownstudio@cox.net.

My fascination with painting a wide variety of subject matter is probably a result of having been an artist all my life. From the time I was a small child I wanted to be an artist. My mother was an accomplished artist, as was her father. I suppose it was in my genes.

I hope you enjoy today’s painting. Thanks for stopping by. I always welcome comments or questions: tombrownstudio@cox.net.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

“DRAMA IN THE SKY
by Tom Brown
8x10 inch original oil
To purchase this, email me at tombrownstudio@cox.net.
SOLD

Sometimes I like to really let loose like this. Pure emotion. Lots of paint. I call this “painting by the pound” because of how thickly the pigment is loaded onto the canvas.

In this one I used a huge brush and a big palette knife to get lots of juicy paint on the surface (look at the detail image).

Then I used my fingers and hand to soften and blend the paint in areas like the sky. This gives it a creamy smooth blended effect that contrasts nicely with the thick paint elsewhere.

I have taught a few classes on this technique of painting, and some day I plan to shoot a video or make a CD about how to paint this way. It’s a delicate balance. The painting appears to be almost out of control, but it is actually handled very carefully to convey the emotion and impact intended. I hope you enjoy this one.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

SOLD
Friday is the Preview and VIP Reception for the Huntington Beach annual Plein Air Festival, which draws many top artists. Artists compete by invitation only, and it's a great compliment to be included. Today we submit our entries at the Huntington Beach Art Center and I decided to preview one of my entries here today.

This is an oil rig off the coast of Huntington Beach. Not a very inspiring subject for most artists perhaps, but it spoke to me. The challenge was how to take a humble industrial blight and turn it into a thing of beauty.

Inspiration struck and everything clicked. Suddenly it came together in a magic moment. It’s hard to show the subtleties on a computer monitor, but in the close-up detail you can see the color and brushwork better.

This piece is very pale in values, almost as if you need to rub your eyes from the afternoon glare. The colors of the water and oil rig are almost gray, but not really. The brushwork is quite loose, and the rig has the impression of detail even though there is very little actual information (but what information is there is accurate). In certain areas of the ocean, the swell of the water catches the peachy glow from the sky. The sky has about a dozen distinct hues; they probably don't translate on a computer monitor but it will give you the idea.

If you live in the area, come join us Friday for the Preview and VIP Reception, where you can meet the artists.

I wish every artist who follows my blog could join me for my live workshops. We always have a great time, and even first-time artists discover how easy it is to paint if you have good instruction.

If you can’t join me in person, check out my CDs and DVDs. Each CD is like a “book on your computer.” You can even print them out for handy reference. They are designed for every artist from the complete beginner to the seasoned professional.

“OIL PAINTING MADE EASY” shows you how to create a beautiful oil painting on your very first try, in easy-to-follow steps. It tells everything you need to know, including how to mix paint and place the brush strokes. I even list specific recipes for color mixing. It's like attending one of my workshops at home. - $30

“PLEIN AIR PAINTING MADE EASY”
shows everything you need to know to join the fun of outdoor painting, including all my inside tips, tricks and techniques. Page 48 even includes a comparison of basic approaches depending on weather conditions. - $30

My DVDs are videos of TV shows where I am filmed in real time, painting on location. You look over my shoulder as I create a number of paintings under different conditions. Each DVD is $30, or you can get the full set of 4 for just $100.

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE BY TOM BROWN

I discovered this abandoned farm on a country back road and couldn’t resist capturing it in oils. This painting has loads of thick juicy, paint that gives the canvas an almost “sculptural” feeling.

It was an overcast day and the colors of the landscape were very soft and restful. This was one of those rare times when the painting almost painted itself, and it was a pure delight from start to finish. Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed painting it.
I painted this outdoors on location using the small paintbox shown in my CD “PLEIN AIR PAINTING MADE EASY.” The paintbox is completely self-contained with a canvas panel attached inside the lid and a palette of paints in the base. I just open the box and paint. When finished, I close the lid and I'm packed. Neat and tidy - and very efficient.

I give details on this and other inexpensive kits in my CD "PLEIN AIR PAINTING MADE EASY." If you can’t join me on location you may want to check out my CDs. They are designed for every artist from the complete beginner to the seasoned professional. Email me for more details. tombrownstudio@cox.net.
